Amaranthus (Fuchsschwanz, Amarant; Amaranthaceae)

Beschreibung: Einjährige, sehr selten kurzlebig ausdauernde (A. deflexus) Kräuter. Windbestäubt. Früchte unregelmäßig aufreißend (A. bouchonii, A. deflexus, A. blitum agg.) oder Deckelkapseln (alle übrigen der unten aufgeführten Arten). Größe äußerst variabel. Bei einigen Arten je nach Umweltbedingungen von wenige cm großen Zwergformen bis übermannshoch wachsend. Blütezeit VII-X. Konkurrenzschwache Pionierpflanzen auf Sand- und Kiesbänken der Flussufer, in Hafenanlagen, auf Ruderalstellen, Äckern, Güterumschlagplätzen, Bahnhöfen und Industriebrachen. Weitere vorwiegend aus Amerika stammende Arten werden immer wieder in Hafenanlagen und sonstigen Güterumschlagplätzen eingeschleppt. Bestimmung solcher Arten mit Spezialliteratur (s. u.).
