Afonso et al. 2018 +''Thymus'' plants are marketed for diverse usages because of their pleasant odor, as well as high nutritional value and wealth of health-promoting phytochemicals. In this study, ''Thymus zygis'', ''Thymus pulegioides'', and ''Thymus fragrantissimus'' grown under organic cultivation regime were characterized regarding nutrients and phenolic compounds. In addition, the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of these species were screened. The plants were particularly notable for their high K/Na ratio, polyunsaturated fatty acids content and low omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids ratios, which are valuable features of a healthy diet. Caffeic acid and/or its derivatives, mainly rosmarinic acid and caffeoyl rosmarinic acid, represented the majority of the phenolic constituents of these plants, although they were less representative in ''T. pulegioides'', which in turn was the richest in flavones. The latter species also exhibited the highest antioxidant capacity (DPPH<sup>●</sup> EC<sub>50</sub> of 9.50 ± 1.98 μg/mL and reducing power EC<sub>50</sub> of 30.73 ± 1.48 μg/mL), while ''T. zygis'' was the most active towards Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Overall, the results suggest that the three thyme plants grown in organic farming are endowed with valuable metabolites that give them high commercial value for applications in different industries. ---- ''Thymus''-Pflanzen werden aufgrund ihres angenehmen Geruchs sowie ihres hohen Nährwerts und ihres Reichtums an gesundheitsfördernden Phytochemikalien für verschiedene Anwendungen vermarktet. Readers of foreign botanical literature have for a long time felt the need of an accurate translation of technical terms which are not commonly found in our dictionaries. In the following compilation the editors have attempted to supply this need. The foundation of the work rests on Schneider's Illustriertes Handwörterhuch der Botanik. Many terms, however, have been taken from other dictionaries, as well as textbooks and current literature. French and German terms of Latin or Greek origin have been omitted whenever the English equivalent would practical have been only a repetition. For such terms as are included in this dictionary the exact English equivalents have been sought. In numerous instances, however, the lack of such has made it necessary to furnish an explanation of the foreign term rather than a translation. The list of plant names includes important economic plants, farm weeds, and the Latin equivalents for the larger plant groups. The editors, so far from attempting a complete compilation of French and German botanical terms, have aimed only at the production of a practical handbook, accurate within the limits set for it. To make it possible for owners of the volume to amplify the list of terms and names given, the publishers have interleaved blank pages, and it is hoped that this will prove valuable for those who use the book.  +

Bonet & Vallès 2007 +The present paper deals with plants used in veterinary medicine in Montseny. An ethnobotanical survey was carried out in the Montseny massif, which is situated in north-east Catalonia (Iberian Peninsula), covers 826 km2 and has a population of 80,000. The information was obtained through 120 ethnobotanical interviews to 180 informants. Out of 584 species reported, 351 are claimed to be used in the health field (human and veterinary medicine), 280 in human and animal food and 236 have another kind of popular use. Medicinal species represent around 16.5% of Montseny's vascular flora. In a previous paper we addressed plant use in human medicine, and the present paper deals with veterinarian uses. As a reflection of the importance of rural life in the region, at least until recent times, a substantial number of medicinal plants (89 species, representing 6% of the flora of the territory and 6.4% of all medicinal use-reports in the region) is used in veterinary medicine. These remedies are mostly for cows, calves, sheep, pigs and horses, and secondarily, to poultry, rabbits and dogs. The main ailments treated are postnatal problems, intestinal troubles, wounds and dermatological problems. In many cases, the use of these remedies in veterinary medicine is fully consistent with their use in human medicine.  +
Bonet et al. 1999 +An ethnobotanical survey was carried out in two regions (L’Alt Empordà and Les Guilleries), situated in North East Catalonia (Iberian Peninsula), with an approximate area of 800 km<sup>2</sup> and a population of 68 000. Through interviews with 73 people, data was obtained on the medicinal uses of 220 species. The most important findings are presented here concerning the ethnopharmacology of those areas. One hundred and ninty four unreported or uncommon uses corresponding to 101 plant species were detected.  +

Das neue Verzeichnis listet alle in Deutschland etablierten Sippen (Indigene, Archäophyten, Neophyten) der Rangstufen Art und Unterart auf sowie eine Auswahl an Synonymen. Akzeptiert werden 4165 Sippen. Die Kriterien für etablierte Neophyten wurden geringfügig modifiziert. Durch den Bezug zum „Kritischen Band“ der Rothmaler-Exkursionsflora ist im Gegensatz zu früheren Florenlisten eine eindeutige taxonomische Verknüpfung hergestellt; Abweichungen werden kommentiert. Cameron 1882 +(OCR recognised) PREFACE. THE present work gives a systematic and biological description of the species of the Hymenopterous Families ''Tenthredinidæ'', ''Siricidæ'', and ''Cynipidæ'', known at present to inhabit Britain. So far as the two first families are concerned, this is not the first work on the British species; for in 1835, in the seventh volume of his ‘Illustrations of British Entomology,’ James Francis Stephens described the species known by him to inhabit these isles. Stephens' work is now obsolete, while since its publication until within the last decade the plant-feeding ''Hymenoptera'' have been altogether neglected. This is a somewhat curious circumstance, considering that they are the easiest of all ''Hymenoptera'' to name, that many of them possess elegant and beautiful forms, and many interesting peculiarities of structure, while their life histories can be worked out with comparative ease, and afford biological and physiological problems of the greatest interest for investigation. The ''Cynipidæ'' or gall-flies have been even more neglected, and only a few fragmentary papers have been published on the British species. The published works or papers on the British species and the workers at the groups being so few, I cannot hope that the present Monograph is very complete as regards the actual number of British species ; while, as will be seen, the life-histories of very many of our commonest species are quite unknown. I cannot hope either that I have escaped the errors of omission and commission incidental to a work of this kind, dealing as it does with little studied and little known animals ; but such as it is, I hope, that at any rate it will increase the number of students of these neglected, but most interesting insects, and thus lead to an extension of our knowledge of the British species and their habits. The literature being thus so scanty, my indebtedness is the greater to those gentlemen who have rendered me assistance by lending me specimens or giving me information. THE present volume is devoted to the ''Nematina'', possibly the most difficult group in the entire family ; and, as will be seen, it contains the largest genus, namely, ''Nematus''. The number of species recorded compares very favorably with what is known elsewhere; but I am persuaded that very many species have yet to be discovered in Britain, especially in the North, where they appear to be most numerous Might I therefore express the hope that some of our Entomologists would pay attention to these interesting insects, and thus enable me to describe many additional species in the concluding volume of this work. Especially is it desirable that they be reared from the larvae ; for in ''Nematus'' many species are excessively alike in the perfect state, although quite distinct as larvae. Thus, if they be reared from the larvae, not only will our knowledge of their habits be increased, but the specific distinctions will be more clearly defined. I regret that I have not been able to figure more of the larvae, but living as I do in a large city, both the getting and the rearing of the larvae is a work of difficulty. The phenomenon of Parthenogenesis, now known to be of common occurrence with Sawflies, is a subject well worthy of extended study, and one which, if our knowledge of it were sufficiently comprehensive, might throw light on physiological problems of the highest importance. My third volume will contain the remainder of the Tenthredinidæ, the Siricidæ, and the introductory part of the Cynipidæ, including a discussion on the phenomena relating to the structure and growth of galls in general. The fourth (and concluding) volume will deal with the systematic portion of the Cynipidæ. In the four volumes are described 382 species of Tenthredinidæ, 9 of Cephidæ, 5 of Siricidæ, one of Oryssidæ, and 179 of Cynipidæ, in all 576 species. The Appendix brings up our information to date, more particularly as regards the nomenclature and biology of the groups. As will be seen, considerable alteration has been made in the definitions of the genera, their number, as compared with what Thomson and myself have adopted, being greatly increased. The only remark I make on this subject is that if exotic species are to be treated according to the same method a large number of genera or sub-genera will have to be created. The Bibliography I have endeavoured to make as complete as possible; but, owing to the difficulty of getting access to many foreign magazines and Transactions of Societies, I have no doubt that many papers have been omitted. Cervellati et al. 2004 +Members of Polygalaceae are known to contain a variety of different polyphenolic compounds such as xanthones, flavonoids, and biphenyl derivatives. Here, we report the isolation and structural characterization of two new phenol derivatives, named alpestrin (=3,3′,5′‐trimethoxy[1,1′‐biphenyl]‐4‐ol; 10) and alpestriose A (=6‐O‐benzoyl‐1‐O‐{6‐O‐acetyl‐3‐O‐[(4‐hydroxy‐3,5‐dimethoxyphenyl)prop‐2‐enoyl]‐β‐D‐fructofuranosyl}‐α‐D‐glucopyranoside; 11), and of four known compounds (12–15) from the MeOH extract of Polygala alpestris. The relative in vitro antioxidant activities of these compounds, in comparison with other phenolic substances from Polygala vulgaris, were evaluated by means of the Briggs—Rauscher (BR) oscillating reaction, a method based on the inhibitory effects of antioxidant free‐radical scavengers. The experimental antioxidant‐activity values (relative to resorcinol as a standard) were compared with those calculated on the basis of the bond‐dissociation enthalpies. The structure/activity relationships for the compounds examined are also discussed.  +

Daffner - Die Voralpenpflanzen 1893 +(aus automatischer Texterkennung) Vorwort. Der aufmerksame Beobachter, der sieh unserer Alpenkette nähert, wird finden, dass mit dem Annähern an dieselbe eine gewisse Unruhe, eine wellenförmige Bewegung in dem vorgelagerten Terrain auftritt, dass nicht plötzlich aus der Ebene die hohen Berge aufsteigen, sondern durch mehr oder minder sanfte Ansteigungen ein wohlthuender Übergang vermittelt wird. Zuerst Hügel, dann weniger hohe, dann die hohen Berge. Und so wie mit dem Terrain als Untergrund, so sieht es auch mit dem Gewand desselben aus: von der Flora der Ebene kommen wir ganz allmälig zur Vorgebirgs- und von ihr zur eigentlichen Gebirgsflora, welche mit 1800 m — einer der Benediktenwand bei Benedi ktbeuern entsprechenden Höhe — beginnend angenommen wird. Es ist daher klar, dass sich unter der Vorgebirgsflora viele Pflanzen finden, welche auch in der Ebene vorkommen, indem eine genaue Abgrenzung derselben nicht möglich. Ohne der Systematik bei dem Mangel eines durchgeheuds gültigen Systems (ich gab die Familie bei den einzelnen Arten an) die leitende Stelle einzuräumen, war ich darauf bedacht, von einem festen Standort — und zwar Benediktbeuern (626 m), daher hier immer Benediktbeuern bedeutet — die einzelnen Vorgebirgspflanzen mögliehst getreu nach der Natur zu beschreiben und nicht nur eine trockene Aufzeichnung zu liefern, sondern, auf volkstümliche Sagen und Dichtungen und nicht minder auf praktische Verwertung Bezug nehmend, auch dem Nichtfachmann eine angenehme Lektüre zu bieten und Lust und Freude zu der schönen friedlichen Wissenschaft der Pflanzenkunde in ihm zu wecken. Ebenso habe ich auf die Abstammung der Benennungen besondere Rücksicht genommen — spiegelt sich doch in den Namen der Pflanzen die Anschauung, der Gedanke jenes Teiles des Volkes, das sich mit ihnen vorzugsweise beschäftigt, wohin namentlich Hirten und Jäger gehören, von welchen daher viele noch, heute gebräuchliche Namen herrühren. Und in den Sagen klingt manches Lied und manche Erinnerung an frohe Kinderjahre traulich wider. Bei keinem andern Volk ist aber das menschliche Leben so innig und sinnig in Dichtung und Sage mit der Pflanzenwelt verweben wie gerade bei dem deutschen Volke. „Merkwürdig ist auch die verbreitete Auffassung der Beziehung zwischen Blumen und Tod; die Blumen, die frischen Kinder eines neu erwachenden Lebens, des Frühlings, und der Tod, das Ende des Erdenseins, der Vernichter des Lebens — zwischen dem einen und dem andern so wenig Beziehung und Zusammenhang — und dennoch liegt dieser Auffassung die sinnige deutsche Weise zu gründe. Die Blume welkt und verblüht in kurzer Zeit, doch erst nachdem sie den Samen, die Verheissung eines neuen Lebens, der Erde übergeben ; so stirbt auch der Mensch, aber in seinem Samen, seinen Worten oder seinen Werken, lebt er wieder auf, und wohl ihm, wenn beide von guter Art waren. Dall’Acqua et al. 2002 +To search for antitumor agents from plants, we studied Polygala vulgaris since cytotoxic lignans are known to occur in some Polygala species. Preliminary data on plant petrol ether, chloroform, and methanol extracts from the roots and aerial parts, showed in vitro cytotoxic activity against the solid tumor LoVo cell line. Fractionation of the active extracts led to the isolation of three new compounds, a derivative of aucuparine and two xanthones, as well as a known methylsinapate. All compounds were tested for in vitro cytotoxic activity using two cell lines, LoVo and its strain, which express resistance to common antitumor agents.  +
